Siemens on December 21st announced that it has set new data transmission record of a fiber-optic cable, laying a foundation for cheaper network service.

Siemens declares that it has successfully processed data at 107 GB per second and transmitted it over an American 100-mile-long optical fiber channel. The rapid development of internet games, music and video downloads creates the need for faster transmission. Siemens’ test proves that its transmission speed is 2.5 times faster than a previous maximum transmission performance per channel.

Siemens said the advantage of its method of using electrical processing was that it removed the need to split signals into multiple, lower data-rate signals to avoid bottleneck, which could make transmission slower and more expensive. “Such a system would be very interesting for the future 100GB Ethernet on which the telecommunication providers are currently working”. Siemens said.

Siemens said it expected the first products based on the prototype could be on the market within a few years.
