The Copyright Protection Center of China registered 22,432 pieces of computer software for copyright protection in 2006, which was 26 percent more than the previous year, an official said Tuesday.

The center rece ived a total of 23,095 applications for registration of computer software for copyright protection in 2006,a record high that also demonstrated the growing awareness of copyright protection among Chinese, especially those working for the IT industry, said the official.

Most of the applicants were companies mainly based in fast-developing coastal cities and provinces such as Beijing, Guangdong, Shanghai, Zhejiang and Jiangsu.

China began to build a legal system for intellectual property right protection in the 1990s. The Copyright Protection Center of China was established in 1998.
