Almost 7 percent of children under 6 years old in Beijing have excessive levels of lead in their blood, according to a 3 year study conducted by the Ministry of Health and World Health Organization.
Beijing Pediatric Research Center researcher Xie Xiaohua says the proportion of Beijing children with excessive levels of lead in their blood has actually dropped from 9 percent in 2004. The current figure is also lower than the national average.
Children are at a greater risk of suffering from lead poisoning if they live in an area with a lot of traffic, if their families smoke or if their homes have recently been renovated.
Xie Xiaohua suggests the best way to prevent lead poisoning is to make sure children wash their hands before all meals. They should also avoid deep-fried foods and other foods that contain lead.
