Taobao, Asia's largest shopping website revealed a report yesterday that the transaction sum of the online shopping reached RMB 2.37 billion (306.73 million USD) in Shanghai in the first quarter of this year and was RMB 1 billion (129 million USD) higher compared with that in Beijing which ranked second. According to the statistics of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Taobao accounted for over 70% of the Chinese online shopping market share. Therefore it can be proved that Shanghainese like the online shopping the most.

The report released by Taobao also revealed that the aggregate transaction sum exceeded RMB 7 billion in the first quarter of 2007 with 35.10 million members and over 60 million commodities which increased by about 100% year-on-year respectively. Among the sellers, the number of those with the monthly profit of over RMB 2,000 ( 258.84 USD) has exceeded 100,000, which means that Taobao has directly offered more than 100,000 jobs to the society.

With regards to the online shopping transaction sum, the top five places were Shanghai, Beijing, Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Hubei. What was interesting was that the online shopping preference of Shanghainese was also different. With regards to the sales volume, the commodities such as the cell phones, telecommunications equipments as well as the IT products like the laptop and accessories ranked the top in the other regions. However, the beauty products such as the cosmetics, perfume, skin care products and body care products ranked the top only in Shanghai.
