Yesterday, the "Hurun 2007 Corporate Social Responsibility Ranking" was released and the China National Petroleum Corporation topped the list.
Among the fifty corporations on the list, there are 18 state-owned enterprises (SOE), 16 private companies and 16 multinational corporations (MNC). Chinese enterprises on the list have accounted for 68% compared with only 48% last year. This indicates that Chinese enterprises have begun to take increasing social responsibility. However, no Chinese local corporations in the IT sector were included in the list.
Hurun says that the success of public undertakings can not be simply measured by money. The employees' participation and their promotion of society and community well-being should also be taken into consideration. In his opinion, Chinese enterprises and foreign enterprises do not share a common idea. Chinese enterprises love to build more "hope schools" in China (schools for impoverished children) and help those in poor regions. Foreign enterprises, he feels, mainly contribute to higher learning education, environmental protection and other public beneficial undertakings.
