Two chiefs of a blood collection station and a health official in south China's Guangdong Province have been suspended and are under investigation as part of the province's crackdown on illegal blood sales, the Information Times reported yesterday.

Li Long, director of the station in Jieyang City, Vice Director Lin Qinbo, and Zhang Ziyang, a senior official of the city's health bureau, are being questioned as police investigate gangs who have reportedly organized hundreds of people into networks to provide illegal blood donations.

Three other people who have been detained are suspected of being the leaders of the gangs, the report said.

One 60-year-old suspect, surnamed Xie, was the guard of the blood station. The police are looking for other ringleaders who are at large.

Some donors are endangering their health by giving blood more than a dozen times a month in violation of state regulations that limit donations to once every six months.
