Chinese police seized 4.2 tonnes of heroin, 6.2 tonnes of 'ice' and 1.1 tonnes of opium during the first 11 months of this year while also detaining more than 60,000 suspects.

In the same period, they also unearthed about 2 million Ecstasy tablets and 5.2 tonnes of Ketamine, said the Ministry of Public Security on Tuesday.

The volume of Ecstasy seized by the police was 4.2 times more than the same time last year and Ketamine increased by 2.1 times, but seizures of heroin dropped 20.6 percent.

"This was partly because of the campaign we launched this year, but we have also seen the increasing use of new drugs," said Liu Yuejin, deputy director of the drug control bureau under the Ministry.

To curb cross-border drug trafficking, Chinese police have improved their monitoring and testing facilities, especially in areas near southeast and central Asia, he said.
