The Australian and Chinese governments are funding a new research centre to develop treatments to boost the human immune system against bird flu.

The new Australia-China Centre for Phenomics Research will be located in the John Curtin School for Medical Research at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra.

The joint undertaking is thought to be the largest funded program in biosciences between China and Australia.

It was instigated by the university's Dr Edward Bertram following his involvement in a China-Australia exchange program.

Dr Bertram will lead the program with participation from some of Australia's leading immunologists, including Nobel Prize winner Professor Peter Doherty.

The Chinese team will be led by Professor Hong Tang, Director of the Centre for Infection and Immunity at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing.
