BEIJING (AP) Police shot and killed five suspected gang members when one of them stabbed an officer while resisting arrest during a raid in China's restive far west Xinjiang region, the official Xinhua News Agency said Wednesday.Eight suspects were detained, and two injured gang members were taken to a hospital.The Xinhua report said some of the suspects were accused of storming into a beauty salon with knives and injuring the owner.The Muslim-dominated region of Xinjiang has been on high alert since authorities said earlier this year there were alleged plots to disrupt the Olympic Games.The government said separatists seeking to break from China attempted to crash an airliner in March and planned to kidnap athletes and journalists during the games, which start Aug. 8.High security followed the Olympic torch's journey through the region last month.Xinjiang, like Tibet, is a region with a culture that is distinctly different from that of China's...
