SALTSPRING ISLAND, B.C. -- The boyfriend of slain B.C. model Diana O'Brien says she was found murdered in the stairwell of her apartment building in Shanghai and that the unit she shared with another model from B.C. was ransacked and robbed of various electronics.

Joel Berry said Ms. O'Brien, 22, was cautious about her personal safety, and escorted to and from work for the JH Model Agency, which retained her services in China, her first major assignment since a round of modelling in Milan earlier this year.

"She told me she would never go anywhere alone and never did," Mr. Berry said at his home on this Georgia Strait island.

Mr. Berry, who has been briefed on some aspects of the case by authorities, said he did not think her modelling work or the JH company was necessarily connected to her death.
