Earthquake-ravaged Sichuan province will need 37 million tons of steel, 370 million tons of cement and 2,100 trillion standard bricks over the coming three years for the rebuilding effort, China Business News reported, citing Zhang Yushan, deputy director of the provincial economic committee. Provincial vice governor Hang Yanrong said the local government was doing its best to help local building material makers resume production so the province could be self-sufficient in rebuilding but accepted it would need to import materials to meet a shortfall. Statistics show the province produced 15.89 million tons of steel, 62.14 million tons of cement and 220 trillion bricks in 2007. Huang said robust demand in Sichuan province would not impact the major pricing centers across the country. Chinese authorities previously predicted rebuilding of affected areas would cost US$145.66 billion (RMB1 trillion).
