History repeated itself again yesterday as top-seeded (and not top-ranked-anymore) Roger Federer lost his first round match at this year's Shanghai Masters Cup, currently going on at the Qizhong Stadium. This year-ending tennis event represents the gathering of the eight "best" players on the ATP Tour of the year for a fierce round-robin competition to earn not only the honor of winning the Masters Cup, but also a nice purse of $625,000.More ball-blazing action below!Last year, Federer lost his opening match to Fernando Gonzalez of Chile. He later recovered to win the championship by winning every match after that. Federer hopes to have some of that same magic because, this year, the Frenchman Gilles Simon defeated the former no.1 in the world 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. As a late substitution for the injured and fatigued Rafael Nadal, Simon hopes to continue his stellar play in his next two matches to advance to the next round, but with a field of the top eight players in ...

Shanghai-based Bright Food Group is not planning to take over or buy a stake in Inner Mongolia dairy maker Yili Industrial Group (600887.SH), Bright vice president Ge Junjie told the Oriental Morning Post on Tuesday. "The rumor does not even seem to make sense given our turnover was US$877.7 million (RMB6 billion) last year, and theirs was three times more," he said. Bright public relations manager Xu Yongxing also said that the company was struggling financially after third-quarter net earnings fell 794% year-on-year to US$39.64 million (RMB271 million) in the fallout from tainted infant formula scandal and was in no position for a takeover. Guo Changsheng, a Shanghai-based securities analyst, said speculation that Bright could consider gaining a stake in Yili was not unreasonable given the extreme fragmentation in Yili’s equity makeup. Yili was a Beijing Olympics sponsor. In a separate story, the newspaper reported that Beijing Sanyuan Food Co (600429.SH) was set to t...

Know what? Forget the angry Chinese youth. It's the angry Chinese guys playing racquet sports that scare us. First it was badminton bad boy Dan Lin threatening to bludgeon a South Korean coach with his racket a couple years ago (and then later punching his own coach). Now it's the prima donna of ping pong, Wang Hao, getting in trouble. Stumbling around drunk outside a KTV bar, he was attempting to relieve himself when he was caught by security. An argument led to Wang declaring "I am the famous Wang Hao! I am the world champion! Does it matter if I beat you?" Which, perhaps unsurprisingly, then led to a bit of a kerfuffle between the two. All in all, not a great moment for the Olympic gold medalist. He's since been reprimanded by his table tennis team, Bayi, and been sent in for counseling by the national team. On the upside, incidents like this lead to headlines like "China's Wang to get Help After Karaoke Bar Brawl". And that's good for everyone.Photo fr...
